Low Level Laser Therapy
Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is a new addition to the physical and occupational therapist’s list of treatment options. The Therapy department has been utilizing a Vectra Genisys Laser with great success. Unlike Anodyne treatment, which offers only a light emitting diode (LED) as the light source, the cluster applicator of the Vectra Genisys Laser System offers laser, super luminous diodes (SLD) and LED’s. This cluster application provides coverage of a broader range of the electromagnetic spectrum and, therefore, is capable of treating a greater variety of conditions. Some of these conditions include carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, plantar fascitis, tennis elbow, temperomandibular joint pain (TMJ), frozen shoulder, myofascial trigger points, muscle strain and ligament sprain.
Laser treatment works by increasing reactions at the cellular level that promote protein production and accelerate tissue healing. The release of serotonin and endorphins is also triggered during laser treatment, which is responsible for its clinically demonstrated effectiveness in reducing inflammation and controlling pain. Some patients have reported up to a 50% decrease in pain after only one to two treatments. This success is impressive considering that the actual laser treatment takes only 2-3 minutes, depending on the condition. Traditional therapy treatment may also be incorporated such as stretching, strengthening and manual therapy to allow for the greatest functional outcome.
